Please pay no attention to the enormous toad lurking in the corner of the room. He thinks he’s successfully hiding under a blanket, you see, and doesn’t realize that his blanket is much too small. The toad won’t bother you as long as you don’t bother the toad and, really, you don’t want to bother a toad of this size.

This wash drawing is from a set of designs for a Ladies and Animals sideboard depicting them in various relations with one another, which was Edward Burne-Jones’ gift to his bride on 9th June 1860.
This particular image shows a lady being frightened by a newt, or, as Georgina Burne-Jones described it, ‘expiating such sins [as cruelty] in terror at a hideous newt upon the garden path…’ -
